Understanding when to remodel your home or when to tear it down and start over can be a tough decision. We have worked with several people who wrestled with the decision.
To some, tearing a home down can feel like a bigger prospect than a remodel. Depending on your situation, tearing a house down can be a less expensive and less stressful option.
Each decision is unique, but we can provide some basic information to consider when you are faced with a remodeling decision.
What to Consider When to Deciding to Remodel or Tear Down a House.
Cost – If the changes you are considering are not drastic, it will be cheaper to remodel. Big changes to your structure can often add up to big costs. In this cast, it can be cheaper to tear down the structure and start over.
Fresh Look or Major Changes – If you want a fresh look, you can do a total remodel with new finishes, new appliances and a whole new look within the existing space. Major changes to how space is used or the overall structure may move beyond a remodel.
Interior or Exterior Changes – If your changes are interior only, with little or no changes to the roof or exterior walls, a remodel is your best option. If you are morphing your house into something totally different, you should tear it down and start over.
Structural Changes – If a remodel begins to push out the foundation, alter the roof or walls it can get too expensive. Rather than make structural changes in a remodel, it is a better option to tear down.
Age and Construction Quality – If your home is old, or the construction quality is poor, tearing down the home is the best option. This can be the only way to fix sloping floors or other ailments resulting from poor construction or age.
Where Do You Find Value in Your Home – If you have an emotional attachment to your home, you should consider getting the changes you want without tearing the house down. If you find value in the home because of the area were you live, don’t want to move, or the property as a whole meets your needs, a tear down is the best option. With a teare down, you can create a home to meet the needs of your family, and still have the benefit of the location of your home.
